Catalog 3.0 creates a directory listing or "catalog" of a Macintosh Hierarchical Filing System (HFS) volume. The volume catalog can be easily viewed in a window, saved to a TEXT file, or printed from within Catalog 3.0.
How to Use Catalog 3.0
---------------------
Double-click on the Catalog 3.0 program ICON to start Catalog 3.0. Then choose a volume to get a catalog for from the Catalog menu (The Catalog menu also has Help... and Audit Setup... items). Depending on the number of files and folders on the volume you are cataloging, you will experience some processing time (measured by a progress bar) while the directory listing is being compiled. The volume's directory listing will then be displayed in the Catalog window, which is scrollable and re-sizeable. When a volume catalog is currently displayed in the Catalog window, you can choose Save... or Print... from the File menu. You can catalog more than 1 volume during a single run of the Catalog 3.0 program by choosing Close from the File menu when a volume catalog is currently dispalyed in the Catalog window, and then choosing another volume to catalog from the Catalog menu.
Catalog 3.0 also lets you "filter out" file types for Auditing purposes. Under the Catalog menu, choosing Audit Setup... shows the following Dialog:
Simply turn "ON" the checkboxes for the types of items you'd like included in the Catalog window (and in reports, or saved as a TEXT file to disk).
How Does Catalog 3.0 Work?

After you specify a volume in the Catalog menu, Catalog 3.0 checks all files and folders at the root level of the volume. Each file or folder name is saved, as well as some extra information: either the file size, or the number of items in the folder, and how many "levels deep" the file or folder is. If the item is a folder, it recursively calls the routine that does a "catalog" of a folder, and increments the "levels deep" variable. "Levels deep" is graphically reflected in the display (as well as in printouts and TEXT files) using indentation, and "guiding" lines. The name of the item and its additional information are displayed in the Catalog Window on the screen and may then be printed or saved to a TEXT file.
Memory Considerations
---------------------
You can increasing the memory request size of Catalog 3.0 in it's Get Info window from the Finder (Select Catalog 3.0 in the Finder, and then choose Get Info from the File Menu). Catalog 3.0 currently asks for 500 K of memory, which should leave plenty of RAM to spare even after an 80 MB catalog, but if you have a huge hard disk or something, you may need to increase this value to 1000 K (just to be safe). Also, there is currently a ceiling of 5000 items in the directory listing. Sorry! 5000 10 K files would fill a 48 MB volume, and most of us would be quite lucky if our average file size was only 10 K! As it is, if your average file size is 100 K, 5000 100 K files would fill a 488 MB volume! I think 5000 maximum items is not an unreasonable limitation, if it is a limitation at all.
Final Note

Catalog 3.0 has been tested on my IIci with Hard Disk, Floppy, SyQuest, and AppleTalk volumes. DON'T try to Catalog a volume that was mounted when Catalog 3.0 started, but then was un-mounted: Catalog 3.0 does NOT re-build the Catalog Menu in response to mounting and un-mounting volumes. Conversely, if you start Catalog 3.0 and afterwards mount a volume (insert a floppy, use the Chooser to make an AppleTalk connection, etc.), the post-launch mounted volume will NOT appear in the Catalog menu. Essentially, when you want to Catalog a volume, MAKE SURE it is mounted, AND THEN start the Catalog 3.0 program. Then just be sure to catalog the volume BEFORE you un-mount it.
